gstar28 In contrast, Paris Saint-Germain, led by the formidable attacking trio of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Angel Di Maria, are seen as one of the front-runners to lift the Champions League trophy this season. The French side will be facing reigning champions Bayern Munich in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Despite the absence of star striker Robert Lewandowski due to injury, Bayern Munich still have a strong squad capable of causing an upset. However, many analysts believe that PSG's firepower and defensive solidity give them the edge in this tie.New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s appeal to the people of Maharashtra posted on X on November 20 when Maharashtra voted in assembly polls, was like this: “Brothers and sisters of Maharashtra, I appeal to all of you to vote today for the protection of the state's dignity and the Constitution. Every vote you cast for the Maha Vikas Aghadi will prevent the theft of your jobs and projects, ensure fair prices for farmers' crops, and bring prosperity to your lives through the 5 guarantees.” But the voters gave him the message. The verdict is clear. His appeal fell flat as is evident from the election results announced on Saturday (November 23). The poll results presented a contrastingly different picture with the MahaYuti alliance securing a landslide victory over MVA. This marked a huge setback for both Congress and Rahul Gandhi. There is no denying that Rahul’s campaign which focused heavily on caste-based rhetoric and Constitutional assurances also came a cropper. Rahul’s freebies offer also did not elicit any positive response from the public. During the campaign, the Gandhi scion emphasised the need for a caste census across the country. He was often seen waving a copy of the Constitution (a Red Book) to symbolise his commitment to this cause. This turned out to be an exercise in futility even as Congress was handed a crushing defeat. The grand old party secured just 17 of the 102 seats it contested in Maharashtra. This result dealt a major blow to the Congress which had hoped for a revival after a somewhat successful showing in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it secured 99 seats. That the party remains in volatile electoral territory is a clear-cut message that Maharashtra has sent out. One of the key takeaways from this defeat is, many argue, an abject failure of Rahul Gandhi's agenda of the caste census. His promise of breaching the 50 per cent reservation cap has not worked. The caste calculus that he pushed during the campaign did not meet with the voters’ approval in Maharashtra, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on caste unity, encapsulated in the slogan "Ek hain to safe hain," proved more effective. BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, crediting the alliance’s success to PM Modi’s leadership. Fadnavis posted on X: "Ek hai to safe hai (United we are safe). Modi hai to mumkin hai (Modi makes it possible)." Rahul Gandhi’s strategy of using the caste census as a key plank may have backfired, as is shown by Congress's underwhelming performance in Maharashtra. Safe कौन है? अडानी 1 लाख करोड़ रुपए की धारावी की ज़मीन किसे मिली? अडानी को Unsafe कौन है? महाराष्ट्र की आम जनता, महिलाएं, किसान, युवा और बहुजन महंगाई, बेरोज़गारी, क़र्ज़ का बोझ और तरह-तरह की तकलीफ़ आम लोग एवं किसान झेल रहे हैं और मोदी सरकार एवं महाराष्ट्र की महायुति सरकार... pic.twitter.com/bRLYBGYUd2 The drubbing in Maharashtra, along with Congress's weak showing in Jharkhand, signals that the party’s efforts to regain relevance through caste-based politics may not be yielding the expected results. The implications of Congress's defeat are far-reaching, especially for the INDIA Bloc, where Congress was once a dominant force. The party’s failure in Maharashtra has put its role in the alliance into question, with other constituent parties now likely to assert more influence and possibly challenge Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. The party’s poor performance is also expected to trigger a reassessment of its strategies moving forward, particularly its focus on caste and constitutional issues. With the upcoming electoral challenge in Delhi, the defeat in Maharashtra and the unimpressive show in Jharkhand cast a shadow over Congress's future prospects. Rahul Gandhi may face increasing pressure from within the party to recalibrate his focus, with senior leaders likely advising him to move away from his current emphasis on caste-based politics. As Congress prepares for the next stage of electoral battles, the mood within the party is likely to be subdued, as cadres and workers wrestle with the consequences of this significant electoral setback. Rahul Gandhi's campaign in Maharashtra, which focused also on issues like jobs, price rise, freebies, and support for farmers, failed to impress the electorate. Congress’s performance in states under its own governance has been lacklustre, leading to growing doubts among voters. Observers have raised an important question: Why should voters trust the promises of Congress when the party has yet to deliver on similar commitments in the states it governs? In Congress-ruled states, the delivery of promises related to jobs, economic relief, and farmer welfare has been slow or insufficient, which also might have contributed to voter disillusionment. The party's inability to show tangible results in these areas has made its assurances less convincing. Voters are increasingly questioning the feasibility of new promises when the party has struggled to fulfil past commitments. The disconnect between the promises made by Congress and its performance in office has likely played a crucial role in undermining the effectiveness of Rahul Gandhi's campaign in Maharashtra. The electorate seems to have seen the party's history of underperformance as a warning sign, making them hesitant to place their trust in the party's future pledges. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed by the authorities, was a popular online personality with a sizable following on various social media platforms. Eagles player to watch RB Saquon Barkley. Barkley combined for 198 scrimmage yards and two scores, rushing 26 times for 146 yards (5.6 average) while adding two receptions for 52 yards against Washington. With 1,137 rushing yards through 10 games, Barkley only trails Baltimore’s Derrick Henry for the NFL lead. He had his sixth 100-plus yard rushing game this season, which is the most in the NFL. Rams player to watch S Kam Kinchens. The rookie third-round pick from Miami had eight tackles, one tackle for loss, an interception and a forced fumble against the Patriots as he continues to come on strong. Kinchens has three picks in the past three games. Key matchup Eagles QB Jalen Hurts vs. Rams’ defensive line. Hurts shredded Los Angeles for 303 yards passing and 72 yards rushing last season despite the presence of superstar DT Aaron Donald. After Donald retired, the Rams turned to a committee approach to get after the passer, and it has worked with rookie OLB Jared Verse and DT Braden Fiske fitting in well next to second-year OLB Byron Young and DT Kobie Turner. But they can only unleash their excellent pass rush skills by limiting Philadelphia on early downs. Hurts has been at his dual-threat best over the past five games, accounting for 15 total touchdowns (six passing, nine rushing) against two turnovers. Key injuries Eagles defensive end Bryce Huff had surgery on his left wrist on Thursday, a move that could allow him to return toward the end of the season. ... That is tied with LeSean McCoy (2011) and Brian Westbrook (2007) for the most by an Eagle through 10 games. His 198 yards were his second most as an Eagle (199 in Week 9). ... The Eagles have allowed two passing touchdowns during their winning streak. Only one opponent has topped 200 passing yards against them in this stretch, with Cincinnati throwing for 222 in Week 8. ... Hurts leads all NFL quarterbacks with 11 touchdown runs and is second only to Henry's 13 scores for the Ravens. ... WR A.J. Brown leads the league in receptions of 30 yards or longer. He is averaging 18.7 yards per catch, the best mark of any player with at least 30 grabs. ... Even before he hurt his wrist, Huff struggled in his first season in Philadelphia with just 2 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits. His snap count has dipped since he was injured ahead of a game earlier this month against Jacksonville. Huff had 17 1/2 sacks in four seasons with the Jets before he signed a three-year, $51 million free-agent deal with the Eagles. ... Philadelphia has run for at least 150 yards and two touchdowns in five straight games, something it hadn't accomplished since 1949. ... Rams WR Puka Nacua caught his first touchdown of the season in New England. He has at least seven receptions and 98 yards in three of his past four games, with only a second-quarter ejection in Seattle having limited Nacua since he returned from a knee injury. ... WR Cooper Kupp has 614 receptions through his first 98 games, which is fourth most in NFL history through 100 games. Julio Jones (619) is third. ... RB Kyren Williams averaged a season-high 5.7 yards per carry, finishing with 86 yards on 15 attempts versus the Patriots. ... Verse has 11 tackles for loss and 4 1/2 sacks through his first 10 games. Verse is pressuring the quarterback on 20.2% of pass rush snaps, which ranks second in the league overall. ... The Rams were 2 of 8 (25%) on third down against New England, their third straight game converting 25% or worse. ... QB Matthew Stafford has not been sacked in each of Los Angeles’ past three wins. Fantasy tip Don’t be discouraged using Stafford, Kupp and Nacua against Philadelphia's pass defense. All three put up solid fantasy numbers in last season’s meeting, even as the Eagles sat on the ball for nearly 38 minutes. Stafford had 222 yards and two scores, finding Kupp eight times for 118 yards and Nacua seven times for 71 yards and a touchdown, so they'll find ways to produce. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL The Associated PressDespite their absence from the group training session, the players remain committed to the team's objectives and are in constant communication with the coaching staff. Small geographical areas and economic challenges can actually determine a country’s population. This is the case in most of the least populated countries in the world. They also have attributes like other countries, like political structure, farming, and tourism, but they struggle economically. The list below is compiled based on The Times of India report. Vatican City has the lowest population in the world, with just 764 citizens. The majority of the people are Catholic clergy, believers, and government workers. The city restricts settlers from joining the population, and to have citizenship, you have to be permitted by the authority. Tokelau is located in the South Pacific and has about 1,915 inhabitants. The means of transportation just by boat limit the number of people interested in living in Tokelau — a major factor that made it one of the least populated countries. As a democratic nation, elections are held every three years. The people are mostly Catholic Christians. Niue is an island country with a population of 1,935 people. Lack of enough economic growth hinders their increase in population. Niue is divided into 14 villages with councils that elect a chairperson each to oversee the community’s affairs. English and Niuean are the major languages spoken in the country. They practice parliamentary democracy, electing representatives every year. The Falkland Islands is located in the South Atlantic and has around 3,803 people. Most of the settlers were of British descent; others were Gibraltarians, French, and Scandinavians. Their main economic activities include farming, tourism, and wool exports. The official language is English. Montserrat is a Caribbean Island nation and a territory of the United Kingdom. It has an estimate of 4,372 people. The Island is controlled by the Head of State, the Premier – the head of government appointed by the legislature. Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a French territory in the North Atlantic with about 5,815 people. It is closer to the Canadian province of Labrador. The nation’s major source of income is fishing. Saint Barthelemy is one of the least populated countries in the world, with around 11,019 people. It is a French territory in the Caribbean with just luxury tourism, limiting population growth. The country’s official currency is the Euro. Wallis and Futuna consist of three volcanic Islands. It is located in the South Pacific, regarded as a French territory. It is divided into three traditional kingdoms: Sigave, Alo, and Uvea. Being in a remote area and having few economic activities contribute to a small population of about 11,439. Tuvalu is a nation in the Pacific Islands with three islands: Niutao, Nanumanga, and Niulakita. The country is between Hawaii and Australia and has a population of about 11,478. Being isolated from main economic centers and trade routes contributes to its status as one of the least populated countries in the world. Nauru operates a parliamentary system of government whereby the president is the head of state and government. Elections for the parliamentarians are held every three years. Lack of natural resources and economic problems have been a setback towards the development of Nauru and its expansion. There are about 12,884 people in the country. gstar288 NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump used his image as a successful New York businessman to become a celebrity, a reality television star and eventually the president. Now he will get to revel in one of the most visible symbols of success in the city when he rings the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday as he's also named Time Magazine's Person of the Year. Trump is expected to be on Wall Street to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, according to four people with knowledge of his plans. He will also be announced Thursday as Time's 2024 Person of the Year , according to a person familiar with the selection. The people who confirmed the stock exchange appearance and Time award were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. It will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who at times has treated the stock market as a measure of public approval and has long-prized signifiers of his success in New York's business world and his appearances on the covers of magazines — especially Time. Trump was named the magazine's Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House. He had already been listed as a finalist for this year's award alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, X owner Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kate, the Princess of Wales. Time declined to confirm the selection ahead of Thursday morning's announcement. “Time does not comment on its annual choice for Person of the Year prior to publication,” a spokesperson for the magazine said Wednesday. The ringing of the bell is a powerful symbol of U.S. capitalism — and a good New York photo opportunity at that. Despite his decades as a New York businessman, Trump has never done it before. It was unclear whether Trump, a Republican, would meet with New York's embattled mayor, Democrat Eric Adams , who has warmed to Trump and has not ruled out changing his political party. Adams has been charged with federal corruption crimes and accused of selling influence to foreign nationals; he has denied wrongdoing. Trump himself was once a symbol of New York, but he gave up living full-time in his namesake Trump Tower in Manhattan and moved to Florida after leaving the White House. CNN first reported Wednesday Trump’s visit to the stock exchange and Politico reported that Trump was expected to be unveiled as Time's Person of the Year. The stock exchange regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the ceremonial opening and closing of trading. During Trump’s first term, his wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell to promote her “Be Best” initiative on children’s well-being. Last year, Time CEO Jessica Sibley rang the opening bell to unveil the magazine's 2023 Person of the Year: Taylor Swift . After the Nov. 5 election, the S&P 500 rallied 2.5% for its best day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,508 points, or 3.6%, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. All three indexes topped records they had set in recent weeks. The U.S. stock market has historically tended to rise regardless of which party wins the White House, with Democrats scoring bigger average gains since 1945. But Republican control could mean big shifts in the winning and losing industries underneath the surface, and investors are adding to bets built earlier on what the higher tariffs, lower tax rates and lighter regulation that Trump favors will mean. Trump has long courted the business community based on his own status as a wealthy real estate developer who gained additional fame as the star of the TV show “The Apprentice” in which competitors tried to impress him with their business skills. He won the election in part by tapping into Americans' deep anxieties about an economy that seemed unable to meet the needs of the middle class. The larger business community has applauded his promises to reduce corporate taxes and cut regulations. But there are also concerns about his stated plans to impose broad tariffs and possibly target companies that he sees as not aligning with his own political interests. Trump spends the bulk of his time at his Florida home but was in New York for weeks this spring during his hush money trial there. He was convicted, but his lawyers are pushing for the case to be thrown out in light of his election. While he spent hours in a Manhattan courthouse every day during his criminal trial, Trump took his presidential campaign to the streets of the heavily Democratic city, holding a rally in the Bronx and popping up at settings for working-class New Yorkers: a bodega, a construction site and a firehouse. Trump returned to the city in September to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Manhattan tower and again in the final stretch of the presidential campaign when he held a rally at Madison Square Garden that drew immediate blowback as speakers made rude and racist insults and incendiary remarks . At the stock exchange, the ringing of the bell has been a tradition since the 1800s. The first guest to do it was a 10-year-old boy named Leonard Ross, in 1956, who won a quiz show answering questions about the stock market. Many times, companies listing on the exchange would ring the bell at 9:30 a.m. to commemorate their initial offerings as trading began. But the appearances have become an important marker of culture and politics -- something that Trump hopes to seize as he’s promised historic levels of economic growth. The anti-apartheid advocate and South African President Nelson Mandela rang the bell, as has Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone with his castmates from the film “The Expendables.” So, too, have the actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner for an “Avengers” movie and the Olympians Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin. In 1985, Ronald Reagan became the first sitting U.S. president to ring the bell. “With tax reform and budget control, our economy will be free to expand to its full potential, driving the bears back into permanent hibernation,” Reagan said at the time. “We’re going to turn the bull loose.” The crowd of traders on the floor chanted, “Ronnie! Ronnie! Ronnie!” The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed in 1985 and 1986, but it suffered a decline in October 1987 in an event known as “Black Monday.” Long reported from Washington. Associated Press writer Josh Boak in Washington contributed to this report.

Surgical Robots Market to See Rapid Expansion Over the Next Decade 2024-2032Andrew Luck returns to Stanford as the GM of the football programUnited States President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday (Dec 2) there would be "hell to pay" in the Middle East if hostages held in the Gaza Strip were not released prior to his Jan 20 inauguration. During their deadly 2023 attack on Israel, Hamas-led militants captured more than 250 people, according to Israeli tallies, including dual Israeli-American nationals. Around half of the 101 foreign and Israeli hostages still held incommunicado in Gaza are believed to be alive. Making his most explicit comments on the fate of the hostages since his election in November, Trump said on social media: "If the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity." Trump added: "Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America." Hamas has called for an end to the war and total Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as part of any deal to release remaining hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the war will go on until Hamas is eradicated and poses no more threat to Israel. On Monday, Hamas said that 33 hostages in Gaza had been killed during the almost 14-month-old war between the Palestinian militant group and Israel in the enclave, without giving their nationalities. Israel launched its war after Hamas-led fighters attacked Israeli communities on Oct 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's military offensive has killed more than 44,400 Palestinians and displaced most of Gaza's population, Gaza officials say. Vast swathes of the enclave lie in ruins.gstar28 legit

Harrowing video shows a beauty influencer being swept to her death in a flash flood in Brazil as onlookers desperately try to rescue her with a ladder. Jennifer Soares Martins — a 28-year-old influencer known as Jhei Soares — and her husband, Wallison Lima, were spotted clinging to a car in waist-deep water in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, during the early hours Sunday, CNN Brazil reported. Video of the tragedy shows several people leaning out a window and holding an extended ladder, which is not quite long enough to reach the pair. Martins and Lima — who had leapt out of the car after crashing during the flash flood — initially try to use the vehicle to shield them from the torrent as the ladder remains painfully out of reach. Jennifer Soares Martins — a 28-year-old influencer known as Jhei Soares – drowned after being swept away by a flood in Uberlandia, Brazil. Picture: NF/Newsx She had been driving in a car with her husband Wallison Lima when their vehicle crashed, putting them in the torrent of water. Martins was later found dead, while her husband somehow managed to survive, officials said, according to the New York Post . “I just wanted her back,” he wrote with several crying emojis on social media later Sunday. Lima and Martins had been married for eight years and together for over 14. The two frequently made posts about their trips and family celebrations. Onlookers tried to help the couple with a ladder that was painfully out of reach. Picture: NF/Newsx But the beauty influencer lost her battle and was eventually dragged away. TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli soldiers raided a hospital in isolated northern Gaza after forcing all the patients and most of the doctors to leave, the Palestinian Health Ministry said Tuesday. The Israeli military confirmed its troops had entered the Indonesian Hospital in the town of Jabaliya as part of an operation searching for Hamas fighters. Winter is hitting the Gaza Strip and many of the nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced by the devastating 15-month war with Israel are struggling to protect themselves from the wind, cold and rain. In the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian city of Bethlehem was marking a somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of war in Gaza, with most festivities cancelled and crowds of tourists absent. Israel's bombardment and ground invasion in Gaza has killed over 45,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians in its count. The war was sparked by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel in October 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage by Palestinian militants. Around 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, although only two thirds are believed to still be alive. Here’s the latest: JERUSALEM — The Israeli negotiating team working on a ceasefire returned from Qatar to Israel on Tuesday, the prime minister’s office said, after what it called “a significant week” of talks. After months of deadlock, the U.S., Qatar and Egypt resumed their mediation efforts in recent weeks and reported greater willingness by the warring sides to reach a deal. According to Egyptian and Hamas officials, the proposed agreement would take place in phases and include a halt in fighting, an exchange of captive Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, and a surge in aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Israel says Hamas is holding 100 hostages, over one-third of whom are believed to be dead. On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there was “some progress” in efforts to reach a deal, but added he did not know how long it would take. CAIRO — Israeli soldiers took control of a hospital in isolated northern Gaza after forcing all the patients and most of the doctors to leave, the Palestinian Health Ministry said Tuesday. Some of the patients had to walk to another hospital while others were driven by paramedics, according to Health Ministry spokesperson Zaher al-Wahidi. He did not specify how many patients had evacuated. The Israeli military confirmed its troops had entered the Indonesian Hospital in the town of Jabaliya as part of an operation searching for Hamas fighters. The army later said its soldiers had left the hospital. The military said it had assisted with evacuating the patients and had not ordered the hospital closed. However, al-Wahidi said only one doctor and maintenance person were left behind. The Indonesian Hospital is one of three hospitals left largely inaccessible in the northernmost part of Gaza because Israel has imposed a tight siege there since launching an offensive in early October. The Israeli army said Tuesday’s operation at the Indonesian Hospital came after militants carried out attacks from the hospital for the past month, including launching anti-tank missiles and planting explosive devices in the surrounding area. The Health Ministry accused Israel of “besieging and directly targeting” the three hospitals in northern Gaza. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, said Israeli drones detonated explosives near the hospital and that 20 people were wounded, including five medical staff. The Israeli military declined to comment on the operation around the hospital. DAMASCUS — Scores of Syrian Christians protested in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, demanding greater protections for their religious minority after a Christmas tree was set on fire in the city of Hama a day earlier. Many of the insurgents who now rule Syria are jihadis, although Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of the main rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has renounced longtime ties to al-Qaida and spent years depicting himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance. It remains unclear who set the Christmas tree on fire Monday, which was condemned by a representative of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham who visited the town and addressed the community. “This act was committed by people who are not Syrian, and they will be punished beyond your expectations," the HTS representative said in a video widely shared on social media. "The Christmas tree will be fully restored by this evening.” On Tuesday, protesters marched through the streets of Bab Touma in Damascus, shouting slogans against foreign fighters and carrying large wooden crosses. “We demand that Syria be for all Syrians. We want a voice in the future of our country,” said Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II of the Syriac Orthodox Church as he addressed the crowd in a church courtyard, assuring them of Christians’ rights in Syria. Since HTS led a swift offensive that overthrew President Bashar Assad earlier this month, Syria’s minority communities have been on edge, uncertain of how they will be treated under the emerging rebel-led government. “We are here to demand a democratic and free government for one people and one nation,” another protester said. “We stand united — Muslims and Christians. No to sectarianism.” DOHA — Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said that ceasefire negotiations to end the war in Gaza were ongoing in Doha in cooperation with Egyptian, Qatari, and American mediators. “We will not leave any door unopened in pursuit of reaching an agreement,” said Majid al-Ansari, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Tuesday. Al Ansari added that rumors the ceasefire would be reached before Christmas are “speculation.” The ceasefire negotiations come at a time when winter is hitting the Gaza Strip and many of the nearly 2 million Palestinians displaced by the devastating 15-month war with Israel are struggling to protect themselves from the wind, cold and rain. Families of the approximately 100 hostages who have been held for 445 days in Gaza are also worried their loved ones will not survive another winter. In a press conference, al-Ansari also called on the international community to lift sanctions on Syria as quickly as possible on Tuesday. “The reason was the crimes of the previous regime, and that regime, with all of its authority, is no longer in place, therefor the causes for these sanctions no longer exist today,” he said. DAMASCUS, Syria — American journalist Austin Tice is believed to be still alive, according to the head of an international aid group. Nizar Zakka, who runs the Hostage Aid Worldwide organization, said there has never been any proof that Tice, who has been missing since 2012, is dead. Zakka told reporters in Damascus on Tuesday that Tice was alive in January and being held by the authorities of ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad. He added that U.S. President Joe Biden said in August that Tice was alive. Zakka said he believes Tice was transferred between security agencies over the past 12 years, including in an area where Iranian-backed fighters were operating. Asked if it was possible Tice had been taken out of the country, Zakka said Assad most likely kept him in Syria as a potential bargaining chip. Biden said Dec. 8 that his administration believed Tice was alive and was committed to bringing him home, although he also acknowledged that “we have no direct evidence” of his status. TEL AVIV, Israel — Hannah Katzir, an Israeli woman who was taken hostage on Oct. 7, 2023, and freed in a brief ceasefire last year, has died. She was 78. The Hostages Families Forum, a group representing the families of people taken captive, confirmed the death Tuesday but did not disclose the cause. Her daughter, Carmit Palty Katzir, said in a statement that her mother’s “heart could not withstand the terrible suffering since Oct. 7.” Katzir’s husband, Rami, was killed during the attack by militants who raided their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz. Her son Elad was also kidnapped and his body was recovered in April by the Israeli military, who said he had been killed in captivity. She spent 49 days in captivity and was freed in late November 2023. Shortly after Katzir was freed, her daughter told Israeli media that she had been hospitalized with heart issues attributed to “difficult conditions and starvation” while she was held captive. TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel's military said the projectile was intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory, but it set off air raid sirens overnight in the country's populous central area, sending residents looking for cover. Israel’s rescue service Magen David Adom said a 60-year-old woman was seriously wounded after being hurt on her way to a protected space. There was no immediate comment from Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. It was the third time in a week that fire from Yemen set off sirens in Israel. On Saturday, a missile slammed into a playground in Tel Aviv, injuring 16, after Israel’s air defense system failed to intercept it. Earlier last week, Israeli jets struck Yemen’s rebel-held capital and a port city, killing nine. Israel said the strikes were in response to previous Houthi attacks.

Director shares plot details for ‘Spinal Tap 2’Before the season began, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was named one of the biggest trash talkers across the league. Now? The MVP favorite and All-Pro has been nominated for an award that is usually the opposite of his usual antics. Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Allen was selected as the Bills’ nominee for the 2024 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award Monday morning. The annual award is given to “an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.” It's the second time since 2021 that Allen has been nominated for the award. Buffalo's franchise quarterback has been known as a dynamic leader of his career and one of the best players in the NFL today. He's the front-runner for the league's MVP award with 23 total touchdowns and has the Bills playing at a high level with a 9-2 record. Related: Who Should Bills Fans Root for in Week 12? Probably the most interesting thing about Allen's nomination, though, is the fact that his on-field antics and trash-talking abilities speak to the opposite of what the Rooney Sportsmanship Awards. By being named the biggest trash-talker in the league during the offseason, it shows Allen's opponents know how the quarterback handles being one of the best players in the league. Allen may not win the award overall, but it is a sign that some current players are a bit split in how they see the Bills' quarterback. And that confusion will only grow as Buffalo continues to find ways to win this year. Related: 'No Surprise' Who Bills Midseason MVP Is

An ex-detective accused of abusing women died in an apparent suicide as his trial was startingBOISE, Idaho — Freshman wide receiver George Dimopoulos threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dane Pardridge on the first play of double overtime and Jordan Hansen ended the game on a fourth-down sack to give Northern Illinois a 28-20 victory over Fresno State on Monday in the Idaho Potato Bowl. Dimopoulos, who played quarterback in high school, also converted the two-point conversion when he passed it to quarterback Josh Holst for his second completion of the season. Holst, a freshman walk-on, was making just his third start at quarterback as NIU was without starter Ethan Hampton, who entered with 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns to go with six interceptions. Holst completed 18 of 30 passes for 182 and two touchdowns for Northern Illinois (8-5). He was also intercepted on the first play of the game. Both teams missed a 35-yard field goal in the final three minutes of regulation, including Dylan Lynch's third miss of the game on the final play to send it to overtime. Fresno State started overtime with a touchdown when Bryson Donelson was left wide open out of the backfield to haul in a 9-yard touchdown pass. NIU needed five plays, and a defensive holding penalty, to score as Holst found Grayson Barnes for a 3-yard touchdown. Donelson finished with 15 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown for Fresno State (6-7). He added three catches for 28 yards and another score. Dual-threat quarterback Joshua Wood was 16 of 23 for 180 yards and a touchdown. Mac Dalena made six catches for 118 yards to help go over 1,000 yards for the season. Fresno State was without 14 players, including starting quarterback Mikey Keene after he transferred to Michigan. Two top-three receivers, Jalen Moss and Raylen Sharpe, also did not play as the Bulldogs were forced to use five new starters. UTSA 44, COASTAL CAROLINA 15: Owen McCown threw for 254 yards and a touchdown and UTSA scored the opening 27 points of the Myrtle Beach Bowl to cruise past short-handed Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. UTSA (7-6) broke away in the second quarter by scoring a touchdown on three straight drives for a 21-0 lead. McCown was 14 of 17 in the first half, including a 6-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Overmyer. McCown also scored on a 35-yard run after breaking two tackles near the end zone. The other score was a 9-yard touchdown run by Brandon High. Coastal Carolina (6-7) finished the first half with just 140 total yards — 60 coming on the final drive. The Chanticleers punted on five straight drives to begin the game — with the longest possession lasting seven plays for 25 yards. UTSA added short field goals on its opening two drives of the second half, while Coastal Carolina started with two straight three-and-out drives. UTSA ended CCU’s third drive on Jakevian Rodgers’ first career interception to extend the program's single-game streak with an interception and a sack to 23 games. CCU’s first touchdown came on the first play of the fourth quarter when Bryson Graves caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tad Hudson. But UTSA’s Chris Carpenter returned the ensuing kickoff for a 93-yard touchdown to make it 34-7. It was the largest margin of victory in the five-year history of the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

The Latest: Matt Gaetz withdraws his name from consideration as Trump’s attorney generalJared Birchall, Elon Musk’s money manager and the head of his family office, is listed as the chief executive officer. Jehn Balajadia, a longtime Musk aide who has worked at SpaceX and the Boring Co., is named as an official contact. But they’re not connected to Musk’s new technology venture, or the political operation that’s endeared him to Donald Trump. Instead, they’re tied to the billionaire’s new Montessori school outside Bastrop, Texas, called Ad Astra, according to documents filed with state authorities and obtained via a Texas Public Information Act request. The world’s richest person oversees an overlapping empire of six companies — or seven, if you include his political action committee. Alongside rockets, electric cars, brain implants, social media and the next Trump administration, he is increasingly focused on education, spanning preschool to college. One part of his endeavor was revealed last year, when Bloomberg News reported that his foundation had set aside roughly $100 million to create a technology-focused primary and secondary school in Austin, with eventual plans for a university. An additional $137 million in cash and stock was allotted last year, according to the most recent tax filing for the Musk Foundation. Ad Astra is closer to fruition. The state documents show Texas authorities issued an initial permit last month, clearing the way for the center to operate with as many as 21 pupils. Ad Astra’s website says it’s “currently open to all children ages 3 to 9.” The school’s account on X includes job postings for an assistant teacher for preschool and kindergarten and an assistant teacher for students ages 6 to 9. To run the school, Ad Astra is partnering with a company that has experience with billionaires: Xplor Education, which developed Hala Kahiki Montessori school in Lanai, Hawaii, the island 98% owned by Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison. Ad Astra sits on a highway outside Bastrop, a bedroom community about 30 miles from Austin and part of a region that’s home to several of Musk’s businesses. On a visit during a recent weekday morning, there was a single Toyota Prius in the parking lot and no one answered the door at the white building with a gray metal roof. The school’s main entrance was blocked by a gate, and there was no sign of any children on the grounds. But what information there is about Ad Astra makes it sound like a fairly typical, if high-end, Montessori preschool. The proposed schedule includes “thematic, STEM-based activities and projects” as well as outdoor play and nap time. A sample snack calendar features carrots and hummus. While Birchall’s and Balajadia’s names appear in the application, it isn’t clear that they’ll have substantive roles at the school once it’s operational. Musk, Birchall and Balajadia didn’t respond to emailed questions. A phone call and email to the school went unanswered. Access to high quality, affordable childcare is a huge issue for working parents across the country, and tends to be an especially vexing problem in rural areas like Bastrop. Many families live in “childcare deserts” where there is either not a facility or there isn’t an available slot. Opening Ad Astra gives Musk a chance to showcase his vision for education, and his support for the hands-on learning and problem solving that are a hallmark of his industrial companies. His public comments about learning frequently overlap with cultural concerns popular among conservatives and the Make America Great Again crowd, often focusing on what he sees as young minds being indoctrinated by teachers spewing left-wing propaganda. He has railed against diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and in August posted that “a lot of schools are teaching white boys to hate themselves.” Musk’s educational interests dovetail with his new role as Trump’s “first buddy.” The billionaire has pitched a role for himself that he — and now the incoming Trump administration — call “DOGE,” or the Department of Government Efficiency. Though it’s not an actual department, DOGE now posts on X, the social media platform that Musk owns. “The Department of Education spent over $1 billion promoting DEI in America’s schools,” the account posted Dec. 12. Back in Texas, Bastrop is quickly becoming a key Musk point of interest. The Boring Co., his tunneling venture, is based in an unincorporated area there. Across the road, SpaceX produces Starlink satellites at a 500,000-square-foot (46,000-square-meter) facility. Nearby, X is constructing a building for trust and safety workers. Musk employees, as well as the general public, can grab snacks at the Boring Bodega, a convenience store housed within Musk’s Hyperloop Plaza, which also contains a bar, candy shop and hair salon. Ad Astra is just a five-minute drive away. It seems to have been designed with the children of Musk’s employees — if not Musk’s own offspring — in mind. Musk has fathered at least 12 children, six of them in the last five years. “Ad Astra’s mission is to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in the next generation of problem solvers and builders,” reads the school’s website. A job posting on the website of the Montessori Institute of North Texas says “While their parents support the breakthroughs that expand the realm of human possibility, their children will grow into the next generation of innovators in a way that only authentic Montessori can provide.” The school has hired an executive director, according to documents Bloomberg obtained from Texas Health and Human Services. Ad Astra is located on 40 acres of land, according to the documents, which said a 4,000-square-foot house would be remodeled for the preschool. It isn’t uncommon for entrepreneurs to take an interest in education, according to Bill Gormley, a professor emeritus at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University who studies early childhood education. Charles Butt, the chairman of the Texas-based H-E-B grocery chain, has made public education a focus of his philanthropy. Along with other business and community leaders, Butt founded “Raise Your Hand Texas,” which advocates on school funding, teacher workforce and retention issues and fully funding pre-kindergarten. “Musk is not the only entrepreneur to recognize the value of preschool for Texas workers,” Gormley said. “A lot of politicians and business people get enthusiastic about education in general — and preschool in particular — because they salivate at the prospect of a better workforce.” Musk spent much of October actively campaigning for Trump’s presidential effort, becoming the most prolific donor of the election cycle. He poured at least $274 million into political groups in 2024, including $238 million to America PAC, the political action committee he founded. While the vast majority of money raised by America PAC came from Musk himself, it also had support from other donors. Betsy DeVos, who served as education secretary in Trump’s first term, donated $250,000, federal filings show. The Department of Education is already in the new administration’s cross hairs. Trump campaigned on the idea of disbanding the department and dismantling diversity initiatives, and he has also taken aim at transgender rights. “Rather than indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material, which is what we’re doing now, our schools must be totally refocused to prepare our children to succeed in the world of work,” Trump wrote in Agenda 47, his campaign platform. Musk has three children with the musician Grimes and three with Shivon Zilis, who in the past was actively involved at Neuralink, his brain machine interface company. All are under the age of five. Musk took X, his son with Grimes, with him on a recent trip to Capitol Hill. After his visit, he shared a graphic that showed the growth of administrators in America’s public schools since 2000. Musk is a fan of hands-on education. During a Tesla earnings call in 2018, he talked about the need for more electricians as the electric-car maker scaled up the energy side of its business. On the Joe Rogan podcast in 2020, Musk said that “too many smart people go into finance and law.” “I have a lot of respect for people who work with their hands and we need electricians and plumbers and carpenters,” Musk said while campaigning for Trump in Pennsylvania in October. “That’s a lot more important than having incremental political science majors.” Ad Astra’s website says the cost of tuition will be initially subsidized, but in future years “tuition will be in line with local private schools that include an extended day program.” “I do think we need significant reform in education,” Musk said at a separate Trump campaign event. “The priority should be to teach kids skills that they will find useful later in life, and to leave any sort of social propaganda out of the classroom.” ©2024 Bloomberg News. Massy Group said: “As a Caribbean-born investment holding company, our commitment to data-driven innovation embodies our dedication to sustainable growth. This approach paves the way for a future that benefits both our customers and our shareholders.” Tech Beach said the sponsorship will enhance its ability to bring world-class speakers and thought leaders to the Caribbean, provide enhanced networking opportunities for attendees, and facilitate knowledge transfer between global tech leaders and Caribbean innovators. “Tech Beach Retreat’s success is not possible without partnerships like these. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — When Kenyan police arrived in Haiti as part of a U.N.-backed mission earlier this year to tackle gang violence, hopes were high. Coordinated gang attacks on prisons, police stations and the main international airport had crippled the country’s capital and forced the prime minister to resign , plunging Haiti into an unprecedented crisis. But the crisis has only deepened since the international policing contingent arrived. The main international airport closed for the second time this year after gangs opened fire on commercial flights in mid-November, striking a flight attendant. Gunmen also are attacking once-peaceful communities to try and seize control of the entire capital, taking advantage of political infighting that led to the abrupt dismissal of the prime minister earlier this month. Now, a new prime minister is tasked with turning around a nation that sees no escape from its troubles as Haitians wonder: How did the country reach this point? Bloody coups, brutal dictatorships and gangs created by Haiti's political and economic elite have long defined the country's history, but experts say the current crisis is the worst they’ve seen. “I’m very bleak about the future,” said Robert Fatton, a Haitian politics expert at the University of Virginia. “The whole situation is really collapsing.” The government is anemic, the U.N.-backed mission that supports Haiti's understaffed police department lacks funding and personnel, and gangs now control 85% of the capital. Then, on Wednesday, another blow. Doctors Without Borders announced it was suspending critical care in Port-au-Prince as it accused police of targeting its staff and patients, including threats of rape and death. It’s the first time the aid group has stopped working with new patients since it began operating in Haiti more than 30 years ago. “Every day that we cannot resume activities is a tragedy, as we are one of the few providers of a wide range of medical services that have remained open during this extremely difficult year,” said Christophe Garnier, mission director in Haiti. Lionel Lazarre, deputy spokesman for Haiti’s National Police, did not return messages for comment. Neither did officials with Kenya’s mission when asked about the surge in gang violence. In a recent statement, the Kenyan-led mission said it was “cognizant of the road ahead that is fraught with challenges." But it noted that ongoing joint patrols and operations have secured certain communities and forced gangs to change the way they operate. André François Giroux, Canada’s ambassador to Haiti, told The Associated Press on Saturday that his country and others have been trying to bolster the Kenyan-led mission. “They’ve done miracles, I think, considering all the challenges that we’ve been facing," he said. “What we have to keep in mind is that it’s still very much in deployment mode,” Giroux said. “There are not even 400 on the ground right now.” A spokesman for Haiti’s new prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, did not return messages for comment. In a statement Thursday, his administration said authorities were strengthening security along the capital's main roads and had formed a special security council. “The prime minister renews his commitment to find lasting solutions to current problems,” it said. The statement was issued just days after gangs launched a pre-dawn attack Tuesday around an upper-class community in Haiti’s capital, forcing residents armed with machetes and guns to fight side-by-side with police to repel gunmen. At least 28 gang members were killed, but not before some reached an area near an upscale hotel long considered safe. “It tells you that there is no functioning authority in Haiti," Fatton said. A main concern in the ongoing crisis is the temporary closure of the main international airport in Port-au-Prince. It means critical aid is not reaching those who need it the most in a country where nearly 6,000 people are starving and nearly half of the more than 11 million inhabitants are experiencing crisis levels of hunger or worse. Gang violence also has left more than 700,000 people homeless in recent years . “We are deeply concerned about the isolation of Port-au-Prince from the rest of Haiti and the world,” said Laurent Uwumuremyi, Mercy Corps’ country director for Haiti. The aid group helps people including more than 15,000 living in makeshift shelters, but persistent gang violence has prevented workers from reaching a growing number of them in the capital and beyond. Basic goods also are dwindling as the suspension of flights has delayed imports of critical supplies. “Before, there were some neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince that we considered safe that the gangs had never reached, but now they are threatening to take over the control of the entire capital,” Uwumuremyi said. At least 150 people were reported killed in the capital and 20,000 forced to flee their homes in the second week of November alone. Overall, more than 4,500 people were reported killed in Haiti so far this year, the U.N. said. Jimmy Chérizier, a former elite police officer who became a gang leader known as Barbecue, warned that a gang coalition known as Viv Ansanm will keep attacking as they demand the resignation of a transitional presidential council tasked with leading the country along with the new prime minister. The council also is supposed to organize general elections for the first time in nearly a decade so voters can choose a president, a position left empty since President Jovenel Moïse was killed at his private residence in July 2021. The U.S. and other countries pushed for a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti at a U.N. Security Council meeting this week. Only about 400 officers from Kenya have arrived, along with a handful of police and soldiers from other countries — way short of the 2,500 personnel slated for the mission. “This is not just another wave of insecurity; it is a dramatic escalation that shows no signs of abating,” Miroslav Jenča, U.N. assistant secretary general for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, said Wednesday at the meeting. But Russia and China oppose a U.N. peacekeeping mission , leaving many to wonder what other options are left for Haiti. Giroux, the Canadian ambassador, said his country supports a peacekeeping operation “when the time is right.” “Everybody is looking at a peacekeeping mission as a silver bullet,” he said, adding that even if that were to happen, it wouldn’t be able to deploy for another six to 12 months. “We need to be realistic.” Giroux said he is hopeful that some 600 Kenyans will arrive in Haiti in upcoming weeks, but added that "none of this matters if the political elite doesn’t get its act together.” The nine-member transitional presidential council has been marred by accusations of corruption and infighting and was criticized for firing the previous prime minister. “I’m at a loss for any short-term solution for Haiti, let alone any long-term solutions,” Fatton said. “The gangs have seen that they shouldn’t be afraid of the Kenyan mission.” He said one option may be for the government to negotiate with the gangs. “At the moment, it is perceived as utterly unacceptable," he said. "But if the situation deteriorates even more, what else are you left with?”

FBI Director Christopher Wray announces resignation

By MATTHEW BROWN and JACK DURA BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Donald Trump assigned Doug Burgum a singular mission in nominating the governor of oil-rich North Dakota to lead an agency that oversees a half-billion acres of federal land and vast areas offshore: “Drill baby drill.” That dictate from the president-elect’s announcement of Burgum for Secretary of Interior sets the stage for a reignition of the court battles over public lands and waters that helped define Trump’s first term, with environmentalists worried about climate change already pledging their opposition. Burgum is an ultra-wealthy software industry entrepreneur who grew up on his family’s farm. He represents a tame choice compared to other Trump Cabinet picks. Public lands experts said his experience as a popular two-term governor who aligns himself with conservationist Teddy Roosevelt suggests a willingness to collaborate, as opposed to dismantling from within the agency he is tasked with leading. That could help smooth his confirmation and clear the way for the incoming administration to move quickly to open more public lands to development and commercial use. “Burgum strikes me as a credible nominee who could do a credible job as Interior secretary,” said John Leshy, who served as Interior’s solicitor under former President Bill Clinton. “He’s not a right-wing radical on public lands,” added Leshy, professor emeritus at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco. The Interior Department manages about one-fifth of the country’s land with a mandate that spans from wildlife conservation and recreation to natural resource extraction and fulfilling treaty obligations with Native American tribes. Most of those lands are in the West, where frictions with private landowners and state officials are commonplace and have sometimes mushroomed into violent confrontations with right-wing groups that reject federal jurisdiction. Burgum if confirmed would be faced with a pending U.S. Supreme Court action from Utah that seeks to assert state power over Interior Department lands. North Dakota’s attorney general has supported the lawsuit, but Burgum’s office declined to say if he backs Utah’s claims. U.S. Justice Department attorneys on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to reject Utah’s lawsuit. They said Utah in 1894 agreed to give up its right to the lands at issue when it became a state. Trump’s narrow focus on fossil fuels is a replay from his 2016 campaign — although minus coal mining, a collapsing industry that he failed to revive in his first term. Trump repeatedly hailed oil as “liquid gold” on the campaign trail this year and largely omitted any mention of coal. About 26% of U.S. oil comes from federal lands and offshore waters overseen by Interior. Production continues to hit record levels under President Joe Biden despite claims by Trump that the Democrat hindered drilling. But industry representatives and their Republican allies say volumes could be further boosted. They want Burgum and the Interior Department to ramp up oil and gas sales from federal lands, in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Alaska. The oil industry also hopes Trump’s government efficiency initiative led by billionaire Elon Musk can dramatically reduce environmental reviews. Biden’s administration reduced the frequency and size of lease sales, and it restored environmental rules that were weakened under Trump . The Democrat as a candidate in 2020 promised further restrictions on drilling to help combat global warming, but he struck a deal for the 2022 climate bill that requires offshore oil and gas sales to be held before renewable energy leases can be sold. “Oil and gas brings billions of dollars of revenue in, but you don’t get that if you don’t have leasing,” said Erik Milito with the National Ocean Industries Association, which represents offshore industries including oil and wind. Trump has vowed to kill offshore wind energy projects. But Milito said he was hopeful that with Burgum in place it would be “green lights ahead for everything, not just oil and gas.” It is unclear if Burgum would revive some of the most controversial steps taken at the agency during Trump’s first term, including relocating senior officials out of Washington, D.C., dismantling parts of the Endangered Species Act and shrinking the size of two national monuments in Utah designated by former President Barack Obama. Officials under Biden spent much of the past four years reversing Trump’s moves. They restored the Utah monuments and rescinded numerous Trump regulations. Onshore oil and gas lease sales plummeted — from more than a million acres sold annually under Trump and other previous administrations, to just 91,712 acres (37,115 hectares) sold last year — while many wind and solar projects advanced. Developing energy leases takes years, and oil companies control millions of acres that remain untapped. Biden’s administration also elevated the importance of conservation in public lands decisions, adopting a rule putting it more on par with oil and gas development. They proposed withdrawing parcels of land in six states from potential future mining to protect a struggling bird species, the greater sage grouse. North Dakota is among Republican states that challenged the Biden administration’s public lands rule. The states said in a June lawsuit that officials acting to prevent climate change have turned laws meant to facilitate development into policies that obstruct drilling, livestock grazing and other uses. Oil production boomed over the past two decades in North Dakota thanks in large part to better drilling techniques. Burgum has been an industry champion and last year signed a repeal of the state’s oil tax trigger — a price-based tax hike industry leaders supported removing. Burgum’s office declined an interview request. In a statement after his nomination, Burgum echoed Trump’s call for U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. The 68-year-old governor also said the Interior post offered an opportunity to improve government relations with developers, tribes, landowners and outdoor enthusiasts “with a focus on maximizing the responsible use of our natural resources with environmental stewardship for the benefit of the American people.” Related Articles National Politics | Republicans scramble to fill JD Vance’s Ohio Senate seat National Politics | Gaetz’s withdrawal highlights how incoming presidents often lose Cabinet nominees National Politics | What to know about Pam Bondi, Trump’s new pick for attorney general National Politics | Democrats strike deal to get more Biden judges confirmed before Congress adjourns National Politics | Bob Casey concedes Pa. Senate race, congratulates Dave McCormick on win Under current Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the agency put greater emphasis on working collaboratively with tribes, including their own energy projects . Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe in New Mexico, also advanced an initiative to solve criminal cases involving missing and murdered Indigenous peoples and helped lead a nationwide reckoning over abuses at federal Indian boarding schools that culminated in a formal public apology from Biden. Burgum has worked with tribes in his state, including on oil development. Badlands Conservation Alliance director Shannon Straight in Bismarck, North Dakota, said Burgum has also been a big supporter of tourism in North Dakota and outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. Yet Straight said that hasn’t translated into additional protections for land in the state. “Theodore Roosevelt had a conservation ethic, and we talk and hold that up as a beautiful standard to live by,” he said. “We haven’t seen it as much on the ground. ... We need to recognize the landscape is only going to be as good as some additional protections.” Burgum has been a cheerleader of the planned Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota. Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked trusted source written by researcher(s) proofread by Ingrid Chadwick and Alexandra Dawson, The Conversation Women entrepreneurs are essential for the Canadian economy, a fact recognized by the government's Women Entrepreneurship Strategy . This strategy was launched in 2018 and has seen nearly $7 billion be put toward supporting women-owned businesses in Canada. Although women in Canada engage in entrepreneurship more than in other comparable countries, there is still a significant gender gap . Only 15% of women are engaged in startups and 7% are owner-managers of established businesses, compared to 24% and 9% of men, respectively. If women participated in entrepreneurship as much as men, global GDP would rise by an estimated 3% to 6%, adding $2.5 to $5 trillion to the global economy . This is not just about economic growth , but is a broader ethical and societal issue. By limiting women's entrepreneurial participation, we are also limiting women's opportunities for employment, empowerment and the promotion of gender equality more broadly. To make entrepreneurship more gender-inclusive, it's important to confront the underlying biases that create barriers for women. As experts and researchers in entrepreneurship, we've identified five common misconceptions about women and entrepreneurship that need to be challenged. Misconception #1: Women don't want to be entrepreneurs The first misconception is that women are not motivated to become entrepreneurs. This misconception partly arises from the gendered language that is often used to describe entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial language tends to be masculine, using terms like "risk-takers," "achievement-oriented" and "confident," which are all characteristics more commonly associated with men . This perceived mismatch may contribute to the belief that women are less motivated to pursue entrepreneurship. While women are less likely than men to start a business, in reality, there is strong entrepreneurial motivation among women. Women make up 37% of self-employment statistics in Canada. Misconception #2: Women are not successful entrepreneurs The second misconception is that women are not successful entrepreneurs. This has to do with traditional measures of success, which focus on business size, profitability and growth rate. Relative to men, women are more likely to run smaller businesses with lower profitability and growth , but this does not necessarily mean they underperform. First, small businesses—regardless of the owner's gender—have limited profitability and growth in general. Second, women are more likely to be part-time entrepreneurs because they often have to balance business ownership with family and household responsibilities. And third, women are over-represented in lower-growth and lower-wage industries like retail and food services . These factors explain the lower performance levels for women entrepreneurs, which are influenced by socially constructed and historical factors, not an inability to be successful. Misconception #3: Women can't secure business funding The third misconception is that women entrepreneurs are not capable of securing business funding. While women entrepreneurs are less likely to receive financial backing , this is not because of lack of capabilities. Instead, women are less likely to ask for financial funding, either because they don't require it or because they're discouraged from applying due to fear of rejection. When women do seek financial backing, they're usually asked different questions than men are , which affects their outcomes. Finance providers tend to ask women questions that focus on potential failures, while they ask men about potential success. Since the framing of questions influences their responses, women's answers—which are often focused on preventing failure—instill less confidence and lead to less funding. Misconception #4: Women are risk-averse The fourth misconception is that women are risk averse, preventing them from becoming entrepreneurs. There is some research that points to this misconception being true; one study , for instance, found that women exhibit higher levels of risk aversion when making financial decisions compared to men. However, most women are not inherently risk-averse. This perception is likely a result of how women are socialized according to cultural norms and expectations. Women are often expected to be more communal and caring , while men are expected to be more competitive and risk taking. The way we define and understand "risk" may also contribute to this misconception. Success stories about entrepreneurs often focus on financial risk —something more commonly associated with men. Less attention is given to the risks women are more likely to take, such as standing up for their beliefs or choosing the ethical route when faced with a dilemma, even if it might result in lower financial success. Misconception #5: Women don't establish the right networks The fifth misconception is that women fail to build the right networks as entrepreneurs. Research shows women tend to develop more formal mentoring and networking relationships , such as through professional associations, while men typically have a mix of both formal and informal connections. Formal mentoring often offers fewer career development benefits compared to informal connections. Women are less likely to engage in informal mentoring, not because they lack interest or ability, but because there are fewer women entrepreneurs to connect with. Despite this, women are actually more active than men in supporting others' careers, both men and women. These misconceptions about women entrepreneurs are rooted in the historically masculine nature of entrepreneurship and can be barriers to women becoming successful entrepreneurs. By challenging these stereotypes and promoting gender inclusivity in entrepreneurship, we can help remove obstacles and create a more supportive environment for women entrepreneurs . Mike Ashley's Frasers tells Boohoo to axe Mahmud Kamani and give tycoon top job

NoneWASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump doesn't think much of Joe Biden's foreign policy record. The Republican president-elect frequently casts the outgoing Democratic president as a feckless leader who shredded American credibility around the world during his four-year term. But a funny thing happened on Trump's way back to the White House: The Biden and Trump national security teams have come to an understanding that they have no choice but to work together as conflicts in Gaza , Syria and Ukraine have left a significant swath of the world on a knife's edge. It's not clear how much common ground those teams have found as they navigate crises that threaten to cause more global upheaval as Trump prepares to settle back into the White House on Jan. 20, 2025. “There is a deep conviction on the part of the incoming national security team that we are dealing with ... and on our part, directed from President Biden, that it is our job, on behalf of the American people, to make sure this is a smooth transition,” Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan said during a weekend appearance at a forum in California. “And we are committed to discharging that duty as relentlessly and faithfully as we possibly can.” To be certain, Trump and his allies haven't let up on their criticism of Biden, putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of Biden and Democrats for the series of crises around the globe. The president-elect says Biden is responsible for the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, arguing that policies under his watch led to Hamas and Russia becoming emboldened. And shortly before Syria's Bashar al-Assad's government collapsed last week, Trump blamed Biden's old boss, former President Barack Obama, for failing to enforce his own “red line” in 2013 after Assad deployed chemical weapons that killed hundreds of civilians, and laying the groundwork for Islamic militants to establish a beachhead in the country. But amid the hectoring of Biden, Trump team officials acknowledge that the Biden White House has worked diligently to keep Trump's circle apprised and help ensure there is a smooth handoff on national security matters. “For our adversaries out there that think this is a time of opportunity that they can play one administration off the other, they’re wrong, and we are — we are hand in glove," Mike Waltz, Trump's pick for national security adviser, said in a Fox News interview last month. “We are one team with the United States in this transition.” While Trump rarely has a good word for the Democratic administration, there's an appreciation in Trump world of how the Biden White House has gone about sharing critical national security information, according to a Trump transition official who was not authorized to comment publicly. The coordination is precisely how lawmakers intended for incoming and outgoing administrations to conduct themselves during a handover when they bolstered federal support for transitions. It's already the most substantive handoff process since 2009, aides to Biden and Trump acknowledged, surpassing Trump's chaotic first takeover in 2017 and his wide refusal to cooperate with the incoming Biden team in 2021. Trump's pick to serve as special envoy to the Middle East , Florida real estate developer Steve Witkoff, consulted with Biden administration officials as he recently traveled to Mideast to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to comment publicly about the sensitive talks and spoke on condition of anonymity. Sullivan, who was to travel to Israel on Wednesday for talks with Netanyahu, has in turn kept Waltz in the loop about the Biden administration's efforts at getting a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza before Trump's inauguration. Biden administration officials say that the two national security teams have also closely coordinated on Ukraine and Syria, though they have provided scant detail on what that coordination has looked like. “Let me put it this way: Nothing that we’re doing and nothing that we’re saying are coming as a surprise to the incoming team,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby said. "They will decide for themselves what policies they might want to keep in place, what approaches they might want to continue and which ones they won’t." Trump made clear during his campaign that he would move to end the war in Ukraine quickly once he came to office. He called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin earlier this week to act to reach an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine . But the Biden White House has begun gently — and publicly — making the case for how continued support for Ukraine lines up with Trump's priorities. On Saturday, Sullivan pointed to comments made by Trump on social media to buttress the case that Biden’s push for continued support of Ukraine falls in line with the incoming president’s thinking. Trump earlier that day had noted that Assad’s rule was collapsing because Russia “lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever.” “Russia and Iran are in a weakened state right now, one because of Ukraine and a bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success,” Trump said in the posting on Truth Social. Sullivan underscored that Biden and Trump are in agreement that there should be no American boots on the ground in Syria and that the war in Ukraine was a major factor in Assad’s fall. “I was a little bit struck by it — earlier in the post, he said part of the reason this is happening is because of Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Sullivan said of Trump. “And I think he even referenced the sheer scale of the casualties that Russia has suffered in Ukraine, and for that reason, they’re not in a position to defend their client, Assad. And on that point, we’re in vigorous agreement.” Two days later in Washington, Sullivan made the case that Trump should bolster the little-known U.S. International Development Finance Corporation that was created during the Republican’s first term. The push for reauthorizing the foreign aid agency comes as Trump has promised to make massive cuts to the federal bureaucracy. Trump signed into law the agency's authority -- tucked into a five-year reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration — to provide $60 billion in loans, loan guarantees and insurance to companies in developing nations. Sullivan called the agency an effective tool for private-public partnerships, before allowing that “maybe I shouldn’t be the one” making the case “since I’m leaving, but I will give my advice anyway.” “It was created as we’ve all noted, under the Trump administration,” Sullivan said in remarks at the agency’s annual conference. “It has been strengthened under the Biden administration. And as we look to DFC reauthorization next year, it has to remain a bipartisan priority.” After Assad's government fell, the Biden administration issued a warning to Iran not to speed up its nuclear program after one of its closest allies was toppled, declaring “that’ll never happen on our watch.” The U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive topic, hinted at coordination on the matter with the Trump team. The official said there had been “good discussions” with the incoming administration on the matter and there was an expectation the same policy would carry over. Biden has also approved a new national security memorandum that is meant to serve as a road map for the incoming Trump administration as it looks to counter growing cooperation between China, Iran, North Korea and Russia, the White House announced Wednesday. Biden administration officials began developing the guidance this summer. It was shaped to be a document that could help the next administration build its approach from Day 1 on how it will go about dealing with the tightening relationships between the United States’ most prominent adversaries and competitors, according to two other senior administration officials. One of those officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House, sought to assure the incoming Trump team that the Biden White House effort “isn't trying to box them in or tilt them toward one policy option or another.” Instead, the official said, it's about helping the next administration build “capacity” as it shapes its policies on some the most difficult foreign policies it will face.

gstar28 casino login It’s Christmas time again in Japan, which means children everywhere are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Kris Kringle and his bag of toys for all the good girls and boys. It’s all enough to make anyone suddenly get filled with the Christmas spirit and go out to spread some cheer. However, cheer in general has been in short order in recent years so whenever it presents itself, people aren’t so quick to take it at face value. That’s precisely why on December 18, police in the town of Yuasa in Wakayama Prefecture were called out to investigate a young man dressed as Santa Claus who was spotted handing out treats in front of Yuasa Municipal Elementary School. The rogue Santa was first seen at approximately 4 p.m. on December 17 and reported to police by the town’s board of education. The following day police located the man and questioned him. As a result, they sent out an email announcing that the suspicious Santa was acting purely out of “goodwill” but reminded residents to remain vigilant to ensure public safety. The incident attracted attention on social media and quickly spread around the country. Many comments online applauded taking action against strangers handing food out to children, while others lamented that society has come to a place where we have to drop a dime on Santa. “That’s not goodwill. It’s potentially dangerous and a nuisance to others.” “There are people who pass off illegal drugs as candy.” “In this day and age, even Santa is suspect.” “Even if he is sincere, he should know better these days.” “There have been a lot of strange incidents recently, so people are on guard.” “This is the most depressing news story I’ve heard in a while.” “Did we forget about drug gummies? Cannabis gummies are regulated as narcotics.” “If you want to hand out candy, get permission from the school first.” It’s always interesting how people are quick to assume it would be illegal drugs like weed mixed in with the snacks, as if most drug fiends are sitting on a mountain of the stuff and have no problem giving it away for free rather than keep if for themselves. Even if the intent is simply to poison or intoxicate kids for some sick thrill, there are way easier ways to do it than procuring illicit narcotics in Japan. But the point stands that there could have been anything in that food from the guy’s boogers to antifreeze, so, as sad a reflection on society as it is, it’s hard to argue with putting a stop to this guy’s impromptu generosity. The last comment said it best that anyone who genuinely wants to play Santa should just go through the proper channels first. We’re sure they would be more than happy to set up a Santa event in front of the school with a willing volunteer. Heck, they’d probably even provide the food themselves. Let’s practice safe Santa out there folks. NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball switched a pair of series involving the Tampa Bay Rays to the first two months of the season in an attempt to avoid summer rain at open-air Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home following damage to Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is scheduled to play 19 of its first 22 games at home and 37 of 54 through May 28, then play 64 of its last 108 games on the road. The Rays are home for eight games each in July and August. A series scheduled at the Los Angeles Angels from April 7-9 will instead be played at Tampa, Florida, from April 8-10, MLB said Monday. The second series between the teams will be played at Anaheim, California, from Aug. 4-6 instead of at St. Petersburg, Florida, from Aug. 5-7. Minnesota’s first series against the Rays will be played at Steinbrenner Field from May 26-28 and the Twins' second will be at Target Field in Minneapolis from July 4-6. Tampa Bay heads into the All-Star break with a 10-game trip to Minnesota, Detroit and Boston, and has a 12-game trip to the Angels, Seattle, Oakland and San Francisco from Aug. 4-17. Tropicana Field, the Rays’ home since the team started play in 1998, was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton on Oct. 9 , with most of its fabric roof shredded. The Rays cannot return to the Trop until 2026 at the earliest, if at all. Tampa’s average monthly rainfall from 1991 to 2020 was 2.25 inches in April and 2.60 in May , according to the National Weather Service, then rose to 7.37 in June , 7.75 in July and 9.03 in August before falling to 6.09 in September . The Class A Tampa Tarpons, the usual team at Steinbrenner Field, had six home postponements, two cancellations and four suspended games this year from June 21 through their season finale on Sept. 8. The Rays are now scheduled to play their first six games at home against Colorado and Pittsburgh, go to Texas for a three-game series, then return for a 13-game homestand against the Angels, Atlanta, Boston and the New York Yankees. The Tarpons will play their home games on a back field. By ZEKE MILLER, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday reached a required agreement with President Joe Biden’s White House to allow his transition staff to coordinate with the existing federal workforce before taking office on Jan. 20. The congressionally mandated agreement allows transition aides to work with federal agencies and access non-public information and gives a green light to government workers to talk to the transition team. But Trump has declined to sign a separate agreement with the General Services Administration that would have given his team access to secure government offices and email accounts, in part because it would require that the president-elect limit contributions to $5,000 and reveal who is donating to his transition effort. The White House agreement was supposed to have been signed by Oct. 1, according to the Presidential Transition Act, and the Biden White House had issued both public and private appeals for Trump’s team to sign on. The agreement is a critical step in ensuring an orderly transfer of power at noon on Inauguration Day, and lays the groundwork for the White House and government agencies to begin to share details on ongoing programs, operations and threats. It limits the risk that the Trump team could find itself taking control of the massive federal government without briefings and documents from the outgoing administration. As part of the agreement with the White House, Trump’s team will have to publicly disclose its ethics plan for the transition operation and make a commitment to uphold it, the White House said. Transition aides must sign statements that they have no financial positions that could pose a conflict of interest before they receive access to non-public federal information. Biden himself raised the agreement with Trump when they met in the Oval Office on Nov. 13, according to the White House, and Trump indicated that his team was working to get it signed. Trump chief of staff-designate Susie Wiles met with Biden’s chief of staff Jeff Zients at the White House on Nov. 19 and other senior officials in part to discuss remaining holdups, while lawyers for the two sides have spoken more than a half-dozen times in recent days to finalize the agreement. “Like President Biden said to the American people from the Rose Garden and directly to President-elect Trump, he is committed to an orderly transition,” said White House spokesperson Saloni Sharma. “President-elect Trump and his team will be in seat on January 20 at 12 pm – and they will immediately be responsible for a range of domestic and global challenges, foreseen and unforeseen. A smooth transition is critical to the safety and security of the American people who are counting on their leaders to be responsible and prepared.” Without the signed agreement, Biden administration officials were restricted in what they could share with the incoming team. Trump national security adviser-designate Rep. Mike Waltz met recently with Biden national security adviser Jake Sullivan, but the outgoing team was limited in what it could discuss. “We are doing everything that we can to effect a professional and an orderly transition,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday. “And we continue to urge the incoming team to take the steps that are necessary to be able to facilitate that on their end as well.” “This engagement allows our intended Cabinet nominees to begin critical preparations, including the deployment of landing teams to every department and agency, and complete the orderly transition of power,” said Wiles in a statement. The Trump transition team says it would disclose its donors to the public and would not take foreign donations. A separate agreement with the Department of Justice to coordinate background checks for vetting and security clearances is still being actively worked on and could be signed quickly now that the White House agreement is signed. The agency has teams of investigators standing by to process clearances for Trump aides and advisers once that document is signed. That would clear the way for transition aides and future administration appointees and nominees to begin accessing classified information before Trump takes office. Some Trump aides may hold active clearances from his first term in office or other government roles, but others will need new clearances to access classified data. Trump’s team on Friday formally told the GSA that they would not utilize the government office space blocks from the White House reserved for their use, or government email accounts, phones and computers during the transition. The White House said it does not agree with Trump’s decision to forgo support from the GSA, but is working on alternate ways to get Trump appointees the information they need without jeopardizing national security. Federal agencies are receiving guidance on Tuesday on how to share sensitive information with the Trump team without jeopardizing national security or non-public information. For instance, agencies may require in-person meetings and document reviews since the Trump team has declined to shift to using secure phones and computers. For unclassified information, agencies may ask Trump transition staff to attest that they are taking basic safeguards, like using two-factor authentication on their accounts.

Mark Rogers leaves Vancouver FC for League1 BCBOSTON (AP) — Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis is slated make his season debut Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers following offseason ankle surgery. The 7-foot-2 Latvian center was upgraded from probable to available about an 90 minutes before tipoff, though Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said how much he'd play was to be determined. Veteran center Al Horford, who has started 14 of the Celtics 17 games this season, is out Monday with an illness. Fellow big man Luke Kornet is also sitting out as he continues to deal with hamstring tightness. “He has worked hard, he's in good shape. We'll put him in position to be healthy and be successful and do what's best for the team,” Mazzulla said. “He's been pretty consistent, just based on his work ethic and what he's done to get to this point.” Porzingis had surgery to fix a tear in the tissue that holds the ankle tendons in place. The issue limited him to seven playoff games during the Celtics' NBA championship run last season. Boston is 14-3 this season, but has missed his presence on the inside, with teams routinely outscoring the defending champions in the paint. Mazzulla acknowledged that how Porzingis plays on the offensive end, particularly how he operates sometimes out of the high and low post, will force some adjustment from how the team has played this season without him on the floor. “I think last year we had an opportunity to see how teams were guarding him,” Mazzulla said. "That'll take a little bit of time to figure out what the coverages are, just get used to that spacing. That'll take some time. ... Then we'll figure out how we go from there." The original window for Porzingis' return following surgery was five to six months. But Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said before the season that they didn't want to hold to a specific timeline because of the uniqueness of the injury. Porzingis injured his ankle in Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks and missed the next two games. He returned for Game 5, contributing five points and one rebound in 16 minutes as the Celtics beat Dallas 106-88 to clinch their record 18th title. Porzingis averaged 20 points and seven rebounds in 57 games for last season. He signed a $60 million, two-year extension with Boston in the summer of 2023 after the Celtics acquired him in a trade with Washington. ___ AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/nba Kyle Hightower, The Associated Press

A U.S. federal appeals court panel on Friday unanimously upheld a law that could lead to a ban of TikTok in a few short months, handing a resounding defeat to the popular social media platform as it fights for its survival in the U.S. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied TikTok's petition to overturn the law — which requires TikTok to break ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned by mid-January — and rebuffed the company's challenge of the statute, which it argued had ran afoul of the First Amendment. "The First Amendment exists to protect free speech in the United States," said the court's opinion, which was written by Judge Douglas Ginsburg. "Here the Government acted solely to protect that freedom from a foreign adversary nation and to limit that adversary's ability to gather data on people in the United States." TikTok and ByteDance — another plaintiff in the lawsuit — are expected to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, though it's unclear whether the court will take up the case. "The Supreme Court has an established historical record of protecting Americans' right to free speech, and we expect they will do just that on this important constitutional issue," TikTok spokesperson Michael Hughes said in a statement. "Unfortunately, the TikTok ban was conceived and pushed through based upon inaccurate, flawed and hypothetical information, resulting in outright censorship of the American people," Hughes said. Unless stopped, Hughes argued the statute "will silence the voices of over 170 million Americans here in the US and around the world on January 19th, 2025." Trump could offer a lifeline Though the case is squarely in the court system, its also possible the two companies might be thrown some sort of a lifeline by U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, who tried to ban TikTok during his first term but said during the most recent presidential campaign that he is now against doing so. During his first term in office, Donald Trump tried to ban TikTok. The U.S. president-elect, who will return to power in January, has more recently said that he is now against such action. (Heather Khalifa/The Associated Press) The law, signed by U.S. President Joe Biden in April, was the culmination of a years-long saga in Washington over the short-form video-sharing app, which the government sees as a national security threat due to its connections to China. The U.S. has said it's concerned about TikTok collecting vast swaths of user data, including sensitive information on viewing habits, that could fall into the hands of the Chinese government through coercion. Officials have also warned the proprietary algorithm that fuels what users see on the app is vulnerable to manipulation by Chinese authorities, who they say can use it to shape content on the platform in a way that's difficult to detect — a concern mirrored by the European Union on Friday as it scrutinizes the video-sharing app's role in the Romanian elections . TikTok, which sued the U.S. government over the law in May, has long denied it could be used by Beijing to spy on or manipulate Americans. Its attorneys have accurately pointed out that the U.S. hasn't provided evidence to show that the company handed over user data to the Chinese government, or manipulated content for Beijing's benefit in the U.S. They have also argued the law is predicated on future risks, which the U.S. Department of Justice has emphasized pointing in part to unspecified action it claims the two companies have taken in the past due to demands from the Chinese government. TikTok content creators worry that Canadian office shutdown will lead to app ban What the federal ban on TikTok's Canadian operations means for you TikTok has also faced increasing hurdles on this side of the border, with Canada's own government — citing national security concerns — recently forcing the company to shutter its Canadian operations , though usage of the app is still allowed. In response, TikTok said it would challenge the order in court. Prior to that, Ottawa banned the app from federal government devices in 2023 . Similar bans have occurred at the provincial and territorial government levels . Two years ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada's electronic spy agency was watching for security threats from the app . Court heard oral arguments in September Friday's ruling came after the appeals court panel, composed of two Republican and one Democrat appointed judges, heard oral arguments in September. WATCH | TikTok loses bid to strike down law that could bring ban: TikTok loses appeal of a law that could ban it from the U.S. 3 hours ago Duration 0:42 TikTok has lost its bid to strike down a ruling that could result in the platform being banned in the United States. In the hearing, which lasted more than two hours, the panel appeared to grapple with how TikTok's foreign ownership affects its rights under the Constitution and how far the government could go to curtail potential influence from abroad on a foreign-owned platform. On Friday, all three of them denied TikTok's petition. In the court's ruling, Ginsburg, a Republican appointee, rejected TikTok's main legal arguments against the law, including that the statute was an unlawful bill of attainder or a taking of property in violation of the Fifth Amendment. He also said the law did not violate the First Amendment because the government is not looking to "suppress content or require a certain mix of content" on TikTok. U.S. surgeon general wants warning labels on social media platforms Intelligence chief warns Canadians that China can use TikTok to spy on them "Content on the platform could in principle remain unchanged after divestiture, and people in the United States would remain free to read and share as much PRC propaganda (or any other content) as they desire on TikTok or any other platform of their choosing," Ginsburg wrote, using the abbreviation for the People's Republic of China. Judge Sri Srinivasan, the chief judge on the court, issued a concurring opinion. Some U.S. lawmakers celebrate ruling TikTok's lawsuit was consolidated with a second legal challenge brought by several content creators — for which the company is covering legal costs — as well as a third one filed on behalf of conservative creators who work with a nonprofit called BASED Politics Inc. Other organizations, including the Knight First Amendment Institute, had also filed amicus briefs supporting TikTok. "This is a deeply misguided ruling that reads important First Amendment precedents too narrowly and gives the government sweeping power to restrict Americans' access to information, ideas, and media from abroad," said Jameel Jaffer, the executive director of the organization. "We hope that the appeals court's ruling won't be the last word." Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, lawmakers who had pushed for the legislation celebrated the court's ruling. New TikTok parent company says it won't sell, despite possible U.S. ban Video Why did the U.S. TikTok ban bill get packaged with foreign aid? "I am optimistic that President Trump will facilitate an American takeover of TikTok to allow its continued use in the United States and I look forward to welcoming the app in America under new ownership," said Republican Rep. John Moolenaar of Michigan, chair of the House Select Committee on China. Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who co-authored the law, said "it's time for ByteDance to accept" the law. To assuage concerns about the company's owners, TikTok says it has invested more than $2 billion US to bolster protections around U.S. user data. The company has also argued the government's broader concerns could have been resolved in a draft agreement it provided the Biden administration more than two years ago during talks between the two sides. It has blamed the government for walking away from further negotiations on the agreement, which the Justice Department argues is insufficient. Attorneys for the two companies have claimed it's impossible to divest the platform commercially and technologically. They also say any sale of TikTok without the coveted algorithm — the platform's secret sauce that Chinese authorities would likely block under any divestiture plan — would turn the U.S. version of TikTok into an island disconnected from other global content.LAS VEGAS, Dec. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hyperscale Data, Inc. DEAR ABBY: Six years ago, my family lost my mother, who was the rock of our family. Two weeks after that, my family started falling apart. My older brother, younger sister and I no longer speak. My brother and I got in a physical confrontation and haven’t spoken since. A year later, I suffered a massive heart attack. I was at death’s door. My doctors said it was a miracle I survived. I’m blessed to be here, but since then, not one family member has reached out. The story of my survival was all over social media and even on a few TV newscasts. My heart function is low, and I had a defibrillator implanted. I have been missing my family more and more, but I’m also afraid my heart will get broken. We have made mistakes, and I know I’m also at fault. I feel awful about what happened, but I’m hurt that no one reached out to my wife or daughter asking if I was OK or if they needed anything. I recently had some contact with my brother’s son, and we have been texting, but I have yet to hear from my brother. My family is growing with grandkids, and I would love to reconnect our families before it’s too late. Is it too late? – Estranged in Pennsylvania DEAR ESTRANGED: Maybe, maybe not. If you haven’t already, write or call your brother and make a formal apology for what happened between you. While you are at it, do the same with the rest of your family members. Tell them you are sorry, that none of you is getting any younger and you would like to be part of the family again. I can’t predict the outcome, but this would be a good start. I wish you luck. With the passage of time, people sometimes gain a better perspective. DEAR ABBY: My sister “Mary Ann” is a hoarder. She refuses all offers of assistance (physically and emotionally) to clear her home of the overwhelming amount of stuff that negatively impacts her life. Our extended family is thrilled that she has finally started to make an effort to sort through some of her “treasures.” Unfortunately, we have now become recipients of birthday and Christmas gifts, some of which are opened, used, dusty and have animal fur on them. We do not want or need these “gifts.” I sense that unloading these items on us gives Mary Ann a feeling of comfort and keeps her from making difficult decisions that will lead to truly changing her thinking related to letting go of her junk. How do we politely (and firmly) express to Mary Ann that we have no desire to receive her hoard, bit by bit, without reversing the progress she has made in attempting to address her disorder? – Unhappy Recipient in Missouri DEAR RECIPIENT: You are not going to “fix” Mary Ann. Be glad she is taking baby steps to help herself. I do not think it would be helpful to “politely express” that you have no desire to receive her hoard, bit by bit. Instead, accept the items and then quietly donate them or give them to someone who might use them. (AP) — Aidan O'Connell might not be Mr. Right for the Raiders, but he is Mr. Right Now. He did enough in Friday's 19-17 loss at Kansas City to show that Las Vegas' quarterback job will be his for the rest of the season — barring, that is, another injury. O'Connell didn't look like a quarterback who hadn't played in nearly six weeks because of a broken thumb . Plus, the Raiders had a short week to prepare for the Chiefs, meaning O'Connell only went through a series of walk-through practices. Even so, he completed 23 of 35 passes for 340 yards, including touchdown passes of 33 yards to tight end Brock Bowers and 58 yards to wide receiver Tre Tucker. He didn't throw any interceptions. “Thought he competed,” coach Antonio Pierce said Saturday morning. “I thought for what we knew we were getting with Spags (Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) and that defense, that he stood in the pocket, made some tough throws, took some hits, took the shots down the field like we wanted. We had some opportunities to take shots down the field, he threw them. And I thought our skill guys did a hell of a job competing and making some really good plays for us.” O'Connell's performance would've shined even more if not for the Raiders' final offensive play. He led the Raiders from their 8-yard line to the Chiefs 32 with 15 seconds left. The plan was for O'Connell to take the snap and throw the ball away to run off a few more seconds, then send Daniel Carlson out for the potential winning field goal without giving Patrick Mahomes enough time to mount one of his signature comebacks. But rookie center Jackson Powers-Johnson snapped the ball before O'Connell was expecting it, and the Chiefs recovered to secure another close, last-minute victory. The Raiders were called for illegal shift, which Kansas City declined. But there was some question about whether officials intended to call a false start instead. Though that infraction would have cost Las Vegas 5 yards, the pre-snap penalty still would've given Carlson a shot at the field goal. Pierce said his team heard an official's whistle before the snap, and that will be included in the Raiders' report to the NFL. “We do that every game,” Pierce said. “Typically, anywhere from three to five questions, and then we’ll get a letter within 24 to 36 hours, and we’ll read it and learn from it.” What’s working Bowers had another sensational game. He was targeted 14 times, catching 10 passes for 140 yards. For the season, he has 84 receptions for 884 yards and four TDs, making him a strong contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year. “We’re seeing double-teams and them really shifting their zone to him, and I don’t really think it matters,” Pierce said. “I think we've got a really special player on our hand.” What needs help The Raiders need to do better on first and second downs to set up more favorable third-down conversions. They have faced 47 third downs from 7 to 10 yards, tied with the Dallas Cowboys for fifth most. Las Vegas' conversion rate on those plays is 36.2%, which actually is favorable compared to the rest of the league, but the Raiders are still creating too many of those situations. Stock up Las Vegas made life difficult for Mahomes, sacking him five times. And it wasn't just Maxx Crosby bringing the heat. Four players had at least one-half sack, including K’Lavon Chaisson, who had 1 1/2. It was a season-high total for the Raiders, and they have taken down the opposing quarterback in 30 consecutive games, the third-longest active streak. Stock down Carlson is usually money, but he missed field goals from 56, 55 and 58 yards. Hardly chip shots, but he is capable of converting from those distances. He had made 30 of 38 field goals from 50-plus yards entering the game, with a career long of 57 yards. Injuries WR DJ Turner injured his knee in the second half. Key number 12 — The Raiders are one of three teams to fall behind double digits in each of their first 12 games of a season. The others were the 1986 Indianapolis Colts and 1972 New England Patriots. In the rapidly evolving world of technology, Tencent Holdings Limited, listed as HKG: 0700 on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, has consistently stood at the forefront of innovation. As we venture further into 2023, Tencent is poised to revolutionize the gaming industry in ways previously unimaginable. Tencent, already recognized as a global gaming giant with titles like “League of Legends” and “PUBG Mobile,” is now investing heavily in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and cloud gaming. This strategic pivot could reshape how games are developed and played. AI technology permits developers to create more immersive and responsive game environments, providing players with unique narratives and interactions tailored to their gameplay style. Meanwhile, VR technology promises to blur the lines between reality and the virtual, crafting worlds where players are more than mere spectators—they become part of an expansive, vivid universe. But the true game-changer might be Tencent’s commitment to cloud gaming. With this technology, players can enjoy high-performance gaming experiences without the need for expensive hardware, as games are streamed directly from powerful remote servers. This model not only caters to a broader audience but also paves the way for more complex and graphically demanding games. As Tencent continues its tech-laden march, HKG: 0700 may just be the ticket to the next chapter in gaming history, where immersive, accessible, and personalized gaming experiences become the norm. Tencent’s 2023 Gaming Revolution: The Rise of AI, VR, and Cloud Gaming In the intricate tapestry of technological advancements, Tencent Holdings Limited stands as a monumental pillar of innovation, pushing the boundaries of the gaming industry to new horizons. As we delve deeper into 2023, Tencent’s focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and cloud gaming not only marks a strategic evolution but also spells a potential renaissance in how we experience digital entertainment. AI: Crafting Personalized Gaming Journeys Artificial Intelligence is not just a buzzword; it is a transformative force that is redesigning the gaming landscape. Tencent’s investment in AI technology allows for the creation of games with adaptive narratives. This adaptability means that each player encounters a unique gaming journey, where in-game scenarios are dynamically adjusted based on the player’s actions and preferences. The result is an unprecedented level of personalization, turning players into co-authors of their digital adventures. VR: Entering Alternate Realities The realm of Virtual Reality pushes the envelope further by providing an immersive experience where the line between the game and the world as we know it is virtually erased. Tencent’s foray into VR technology is anticipated to lead to a new breed of games that transcend conventional two-dimensional screens, offering spatial interactions and environments. Players don’t just watch or control—they exist within these newly crafted universes, making the experience profoundly engaging and interactive. Cloud Gaming: Redefining Accessibility and Performance At the heart of Tencent’s innovative pursuit is its investment in cloud gaming infrastructure . Unlike traditional gaming models that rely heavily on user hardware, cloud gaming leverages powerful remote servers to stream games. This model democratizes access to high-quality gaming, allowing players with varying financial capacities to enjoy the same top-tier gaming experiences. By removing the hardware barrier, Tencent not only expands its reach to a wider audience but also sets the stage for games that are richer in detail and complexity. Looking Ahead: Trends and Predictions As these technologies mature, several trends and predictions underscore the future of gaming: 1. Rise of Subscription Models : Given the shift towards cloud gaming, subscription models akin to Netflix are expected to become prevalent in the gaming industry. 2. Enhanced Multiplayer Experience : With AI and cloud capabilities, expect multiplayer experiences to be more interactive, with real-time data processing enriching competitive aspects. 3. Sustainability : Leveraging cloud technologies could lead to reduced reliance on physical hardware, supporting a more eco-friendly gaming ecosystem. Conclusion With its strategic investments, Tencent is not just participating in the evolving gaming landscape; it is reshaping it. AI, VR, and cloud gaming are not standalone innovations but part of a convergent ecosystem set to redefine what gaming is and what it can become. The implications extend beyond entertainment, offering new paradigms in interactivity and accessibility that will likely influence future technological trends across industries. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflTwo women filed lawsuits against Sean “Diddy” Combs on Friday. As reported by the Rolling Stone, One woman in a lawsuit has alleged that Combs sexually assaulted her at a City College of New York basketball game in December 1991, shortly before a deadly stampede. The other woman claims Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her at a 2006 party in New York. Combs' lawyers responded to the allegations, stating, “Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone or engaged in sex trafficking.” The first lawsuit, filed by a Jane Doe (pseudonym), claims Combs gave her a drink in a makeshift dressing room at the basketball game. She alleges that after consuming the drink, she felt unwell and Combs subsequently assaulted her. She claims Combs threatened her when she said she would report the incident. According to Doe, when she left, she saw “chaotic” scene outside the makeshift dressing room. Notably, in the 1991 City College stampede , nine people were crushed to death at the bottom of the staircase, while 29 others were injured. Meanwhile in the second lawsuit was filed by LaTroya Grayson. She alleges that she became ill after having two drinks at a party hosted by Combs. She claims she woke up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. Grayson’s lawsuit names several co-defendants, including the radio station that ran the contest she won to attend the party, Atlantic Records, and Delta Airlines. Combs' lawyers responded to Grayson’s claims saying: “Ms. Grayson admits she has no memory of the events alleged in her complaint, does not know who was supposedly involved, and has never spoken to Mr. Combs. Her allegations against him are pure fiction. As we’ve said before, Mr. Combs cannot respond to every baseless lawsuit and lawyer-driven money grab. He has faith in the judicial process, in which fact will be separated from opportunistic fabrications like these.” Web Development C++ Fundamentals for Absolute Beginners By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) Java Programming with ChatGPT: Learn using Generative AI By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Web Development Advanced Java Mastery: Object-Oriented Programming Techniques By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) AI and Analytics based Business Strategy By - Tanusree De, Managing Director- Accenture Technology Lead, Trustworthy AI Center of Excellence: ATCI View Program Finance Crypto & NFT Mastery: From Basics to Advanced By - CA Raj K Agrawal, Chartered Accountant View Program Design Canva Magic Write: Ideas to Stunning Slides in No Time By - Prince Patni, Software Developer (BI, Data Science) View Program Finance A2Z Of Finance: Finance Beginner Course By - elearnmarkets, Financial Education by StockEdge View Program Soft Skills Cross-Cultural Communication Mastery: Connect with Confidence By - Prince Patni, Software Developer (BI, Data Science) View Program Web Development A Comprehensive ASP.NET Core MVC 6 Project Guide for 2024 By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) Learn InVideo AI: Create Videos from Text Easily By - Prince Patni, Software Developer (BI, Data Science) View Program Marketing Modern Marketing Masterclass by Seth Godin By - Seth Godin, Former dot com Business Executive and Best Selling Author View Program Finance Tally Prime & GST Accounting: Complete Guide By - CA Raj K Agrawal, Chartered Accountant View Program Entrepreneurship From Idea to Product: A Startup Development Guide By - Dr. Anu Khanchandani, Startup Coach with more than 25 years of experience View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) ChatGPT Mastery from Zero to Hero: The Complete AI Course By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Web Development Intermediate C++ Skills: Master Pointers, Structures and File Stream By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Marketing Future of Marketing & Branding Masterclass By - Dr. David Aaker, Professor Emeritus at the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley, Author | Speaker | Thought Leader | Branding Consultant View Program Finance AI and Generative AI for Finance By - Hariom Tatsat, Vice President- Quantitative Analytics at Barclays View Program Entrepreneurship Crafting a Powerful Startup Value Proposition By - Dr. Anu Khanchandani, Startup Coach with more than 25 years of experience View Program Finance Value and Valuation Masterclass By - CA Himanshu Jain, Ex McKinsey, Moody's, and PwC, Co - founder, The WallStreet School View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) AI-Powered Python Mastery with Tabnine: Boost Your Coding Skills By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Marketing Digital Marketing Masterclass by Pam Moore By - Pam Moore, Digital Transformation and Social Media Expert View Program Finance Financial Literacy i.e Lets Crack the Billionaire Code By - CA Rahul Gupta, CA with 10+ years of experience and Accounting Educator View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) Mastering C++ Fundamentals with Generative AI: A Hands-On By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Data Science SQL Server Bootcamp 2024: Transform from Beginner to Pro By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Artificial Intelligence(AI) Generative AI for Dynamic Java Web Applications with ChatGPT By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program Data Science MySQL for Beginners: Learn Data Science and Analytics Skills By - Metla Sudha Sekhar, IT Specialist and Developer View Program These new lawsuits follow other legal actions against Combs, including a previous sex trafficking complaint filed by his ex-partner, which was settled. Aidan O'Connell shows in loss to Chiefs that he is the Raiders' QB for the rest of seasonKundi sees governance failure in KP Governor alleges that 1,500 FRP personnel were taken to Islamabad by PTI government for protest PESHAWAR: Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Saturday criticised the provincial government over “failed governance” and disrupting national progress through continuous protests. “There are two governments functioning in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. One is led by the chief minister and the other by a “defecto chief minister,” he said while talking to reporters at the Peshawar Press Club. Alluding to Bushra Bibi, the wife of Imran Khan, he said the two were at odds over whether protesters should march toward Sangjani or D-Chowk in Islamabad. The governor raised questions about the burning of a container belonging to the chief minister in Islamabad during the PTI protest, suggesting that it could either be an act of negligence or intentional sabotage by those trying to remove a “defective chief minister.” Kundi lamented that these differences were not about developmental issues but rather political maneuvering. He emphasized that the KP needed peace and development, especially in Kurram and Bajaur, and called for a unified focus on restoring peace. The governor accused the PTI of misusing government resources, claiming that salaries of Tehsil Municipal Administration employees, health officials, and teachers were diverted to fund protests. He alleged that 1,500 Frontier Reserve Police (FRP) personnel were taken to Islamabad by the PTI government for the protest. He dismissed claims of a clash between the Centre and KP, stating that the chief minister often complied with federal government decisions during meetings but failed to take practical steps in the province. Commenting on the possibility of the governor’s rule in KP, Kundi said the Constitution provided for such measures if deemed necessary by the federal government.Sunday, December 22, 2024 Facebook Instagram Twitter WhatsApp Youtube Personal Finance Education Entertainment Jobs Alert Sports Hindi Technology Complaint Redressal. Personal Finance Savings account rules: Do not deposit so much money in your bank account, otherwise be ready for a tax notice By Shyamu Maurya December 22, 2024 0 20 Share Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Telegram Savings account rules: Do not deposit so much money in your bank account, otherwise be ready for a tax notice Savings account rules: Common people are not aware of many rules related to savings account and later they have to face income tax notice. In such a situation, it is better that they know about it beforehand. Savings account rules: Have you ever wondered how much money you can deposit in your savings bank account in a business year? There is a provision for this under the tax law, in which you can get a notice from the tax department for depositing more than the prescribed limit during a business year. This limit is up to Rs 10 lakh. You may have to pay tax on deposits of more than Rs 10 lakh in a savings account between April 1 and March 31 in a business year. If you deposit more than Rs 10 lakh, then it is mandatory to inform the Income Tax Department about this. This limit is not only for one savings account, but for all your savings accounts. Banks themselves disclose the details of such transactions at their level. What will happen on deposits of more than Rs 10 lakh? Deposits of more than Rs 10 lakh are considered high-value transactions. In such a situation, banks or financial institutions give information about such deposits to the Income Tax Department under the tax law. It is also mandatory to provide PAN on deposits of Rs 50,000 in a day. If someone does not have a PAN, then they have to submit Form 60/61. What will happen to the interest received on deposits? Let us also tell you that if you earn more than Rs 10,000 interest on bank deposits in a business year, then tax is levied on it on the basis of the fixed slab. If the interest received from bank deposits in a business year is less than Rs 10,000, then tax exemption can be obtained under Section 80TTA of the Income Tax Act. Senior citizens can get tax exemption on interest up to Rs 50,000 under section 80TTB. To calculate this limit, you have to add the interest earned on deposits in all your bank accounts. What to do if you get such a notice from the tax department? If you receive a notice from the Income Tax Department regarding a high-value transaction, first of all you will have to provide sufficient evidence for it. Bank statements, investment records and inheritance documents may be required. It would be better for you to consult a certified tax advisor on this. As far as transactions in cash are concerned, under section 269ST, no person can transact more than Rs 2 lakh with anyone at one time in a day. VPNs and other dangers Use of religion to justify administrative actions is not new in Pakistan but often leads to unintended consequences In an extraordinary step, the government has advised the PTA to crack down on VPNs, claiming they are used for immoral and illegal activities. Pakistan often frames such measures through the lens of religion, raising concerns about their underlying motives. The timing of the decision raises critical questions. Is it genuinely about morality and legality, or is it part of a broader effort to suppress dissent? The use of religion to justify political or administrative actions is not new in Pakistan, but it often leads to unintended consequences, including public backlash and questions about the state’s priorities. As a result of the order – which the PTA claims can be enforced efficiently – a number of businesses and individuals have already registered their VPNs, as demanded. However, many others likely have not, and it remains unclear how these individuals will be detected and acted against. VPNs became widespread in Pakistan after the government cracked down on X/Twitter, reportedly due to contentious discussions on the platform. Their use has since been a topic of controversy. It is, however, difficult to comprehend how VPNs could be deemed un-Islamic. This verdict aligns with historical decisions, such as the ban on televisions in Afghanistan or the prohibition of the printing press in Turkey decades ago. These measures, often devoid of logic, have limited success in curbing dissent. At present, the government is locked in a clash with the PTI. Compounding the situation is the ongoing smog crisis in Lahore and other cities, which has forced schools to close and created further challenges for students required to work online. Freelancers and remote workers, relying on VPNs for medical transcription, accounting, and other tasks, are also adversely affected. Many educational institutions, already grappling with infrastructure issues, now face an additional hurdle as online education becomes harder to manage. The economic repercussions of this decision are far-reaching, especially for Pakistan’s burgeoning freelance community. At a time when unemployment is rising and economic pressures are mounting, this ban threatens the livelihoods of many. The government needs to reconsider its stance on VPNs, especially given the difficulty of enforcing such a ruling in a country as chaotic as Pakistan. This decision could also discourage foreign companies from outsourcing work to Pakistani freelancers, a segment that contributes significantly to the economy. VPNs are often used not for nefarious purposes, but to ensure secure communication channels and access to global platforms. A blanket ban without nuanced policies risks alienating a productive workforce and tarnishing Pakistan’s reputation in the global digital market. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has also targeted vehicles with high smoke emissions, requiring owners to install new equipment to combat pollution. Yet, reports from Bilal Ganj, a popular market for used vehicle parts, reveal how Pakistanis circumvent laws: many vehicle owners rent emission-reducing equipment, present it for inspection, and return it after obtaining approval. This highlights a deeper issue of governance and enforcement in Pakistan. The ingenuity displayed in bypassing laws underscores the lack of trust between citizens and the state, where rules are often seen as obstacles rather than guidelines for collective well-being. The government's suggestion that VPNs foster immorality is also questionable. Offering constructive alternatives, such as engaging young people with positive content, would be a more effective approach. For instance, investing in digital literacy programs, promoting ethical online behaviour, and fostering awareness about the responsible use of technology could yield better results than outright bans. Moreover, in an environment where internet access is restricted during political rallies or speeches, VPN usage is bound to rise. People depend on the internet for information and work, and banning VPNs unnecessarily burdens law-abiding citizens. The government’s decision seems more about exerting control than addressing real issues. In this digital age, the convenience of accessing information through the internet has largely replaced traditional libraries and encyclopedias. Blocking VPNs, which facilitate access to platforms like X, disrupts lives and livelihoods. The government must find better ways to address political dissent without infringing on constitutional rights. The right to peaceful assembly, free expression, and access to information is guaranteed under Pakistan’s constitution. The ban also contradicts global norms of internet freedom, raising questions about Pakistan’s commitment to international standards. With the PTA and other authorities enforcing these bans, there is also a risk of corruption. Many fear the ban will be used to extract bribes in exchange for approval letters or stamps. Such practices are unacceptable and undermine the fundamental rights of citizens. Rather than pursuing ineffective bans, the government must focus on promoting dialogue, addressing grievances, and ensuring that constitutional freedoms are upheld for all. The larger issue here is one of priorities. Pakistan faces countless challenges, from economic instability and unemployment to environmental degradation and a crumbling education system. In such a context, focusing on bans that target tools like VPNs, rather than addressing structural issues, seems shortsighted. The state’s role should be to empower its citizens, not restrict them unnecessarily. Rather than resorting to measures that stifle dissent and create unnecessary obstacles for citizens, the focus should be on fostering trust, ensuring transparency, and protecting the fundamental rights of all Pakistanis. Only then can Pakistan hope to address its complex challenges and move toward a more inclusive and progressive society. The writer is a freelance columnist and former newspaper editor. gstar28 app Philomena Cunk, aka the hilarious Diane Morgan, is back with a new Netflix special, Cunk On LifeBrazil’s federal police last Thursday formally accused Mr Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup. They sent their 884-page report to the Supreme Court, which lifted the seal. “The evidence collected throughout the investigation shows unequivocally that then-president Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organisation aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law, which did not take place due to reasons unrelated to his desire,” the document said. At another point, it says: “Bolsonaro had full awareness and active participation.” Mr Bolsonaro, who had repeatedly alleged without evidence that the country’s electronic voting system was prone to fraud, called a meeting in December 2022, during which he presented a draft decree to the commanders of the three divisions of the armed forces, according to the police report, signed by four investigators. The decree would have launched an investigation into suspicions of fraud and crimes related to the October 2022 vote, and suspended the powers of the nation’s electoral court. The navy’s commander stood ready to comply, but those from the army and air force objected to any plan that prevented Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s inauguration, the report said. Those refusals are why the plan did not go ahead, according to witnesses who spoke to investigators. Mr Bolsonaro never signed the decree to set the final stage of the alleged plan into action. Mr Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or awareness of any plot to keep him in power or oust his leftist rival and successor. “No one is going to do a coup with a reserve general and half a dozen other officers. What is being said is absurd. For my part, there has never been any discussion of a coup,” Mr Bolsonaro told journalists in the capital Brasilia on Monday. “If someone came to discuss a coup with me, I’d say, that’s fine, but the day after, how does the world view us?” he added. “The word ‘coup’ has never been in my dictionary.” The top court has passed the report on to prosecutor-general Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Mr Bolsonaro. Rodrigo Rios, a law professor at the PUC university in the city of Curitiba, said Mr Bolsonaro could face up to a minimum of 11 years in prison if convicted on all charges. “A woman involved in the January 8 attack on the Supreme Court received a 17-year prison sentence,” Mr Rios told the Associated Press, noting that the former president is more likely to receive 15 years or more if convicted. “Bolsonaro’s future looks dark.” Ahead of the 2022 election, Mr Bolsonaro repeatedly alleged that the election system, which does not use paper ballots, could be tampered with. The top electoral court later ruled that he had abused his power to cast unfounded doubt on the voting system, and ruled him ineligible for office until 2030. Still, he has maintained that he will stand as a candidate in the 2026 race. Since Mr Bolsonaro left office, he has been targeted by several investigations, all of which he has chalked up to political persecution. Federal police have accused him of smuggling diamond jewellery into Brazil without properly declaring them and directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ Covid-19 vaccination statuses. Authorities are also investigating whether he incited the riot on January 8 2022 in which his followers ransacked the Supreme Court and presidential palace in Brasilia, seeking to prompt intervention by the army that would oust Mr Lula from power. Mr Bolsonaro had left for the United States days before Mr Lula’s inauguration on January 1 2023 and stayed there for three months, keeping a low profile. The police report unsealed on Tuesday alleges he was seeking to avoid possible imprisonment related to the coup plot, and also await the uprising that took place a week later.

GREG COTE’S NFL WEEK 13 THANKSGIVING DAY PICKS BEARS (4-7) at LIONS (10-1) Line: DET by 10. Cote’s pick: DET, 34-16. TV: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, CBS. The traditional roasted bird will just about be going into the Cote oven Thursday when the opener of the NFL Thanksgiving tripleheader kicks off. This is proving not to be the season to expect Detroit to revert to its old self. Because Dan Campbell has a monster going on. The Lions as double-digit favorites? Last two times that has happened. this season, Jared Goff and the lads have put up 52 points ... not total, in each game. Bears QB Caleb Williams has been better under new O-coordinator Thomas Brown. That and the rival/division factor could see the Bears hanging around as your Turkey Day digs in. But Detroit has turned into a juggernaut to be feared not doubted. At home and with America watching, I’d expect the Lions, especially that offense, to be in full preen mode. GIANTS (2-9) at COWBOYS (4-7) Line: DAL by 3 1/2. Cote’s pick: DAL, 24-17. TV: 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Fox. Dallas will be putting its 0-5 home record on national display right around the time the Cotes (and many of you) are sitting down at the banquet table Thursday. Cowboys have owned this NFC East rivalry, winning seven straight games, 14 of the past 15, and the and the past seven in a row at Jerry’s House. Now it’s the duel of break-glass-in-case-of-emergency QBs in Cooper Rush vs. Tommy DeVito. And two head coaches under fire, with the seat under Brian Dabol even hotter. Dallas Micah Parsons had two sacks in the upset win at Washington, and now faces an NYG squad that majors in giving up sacks. We’re praying for you, DeVito. Well, OK, not really. Because we’re rooting for our pick. Giants are 0-5 covering as a dog of four points or less. Let’s keep it that way. DOLPHINS (5-6) at PACKERS (8-3) Line: GB by 3 1/2. Cote’s pick: MIA, 27-23. TV: 8:20 p.m. Thursday, NBC/Peacock. Feast digested, tryptophan kicking in, dessert looking good but too full to eat. While the rest of us are feeling this on Thanksgiving night, the Dolphins are taking the field at Lambeau Field, with temperatures expected in the low 20s, with wind gusts but (mercifully) only a small chance of rain meaning snow. Oy! Brutal weather. Teams last met in 2022 (Tua Tagovailoa threw three picks), and Miami last won in Green Bay in 2010. But Miami has won three in a row entering this to hoist its season toward playoff hope, with Tua playing great. Yes, Tua in this kind of weather has not been a pretty sight. In fact he is 0-7 in games where the temperature is 40 or below, most recently in the playoff loss in Kansas City last January. Still, the Dolphins’ solid run defense will force Jordan Love to try to win in the air in conditions he can’t love, either. Yeah, yeah, I get it. There is every reason in the world to think pragmatically here, to think safely, to pick the Pack on the Frozen Tundra. But I’m feeling saucy. Maybe it’s the holiday? Blame my friend Jim Beam? Tua said this week, “I love killing narratives.” This one is: Miami can’t beat good teams, and can’t win in the freezing cold. So that makes this a two-for-one narrative-killing holiday special. And early Black Friday sale! I say the Dolphins, with a ton to prove, will stay hot in the freezing cold. Upset! Betting lines courtesy ESPNBet as of Tuesday evening..
